Chapter Ten

Toral_Prog_Beta1. WomnCtr_Prog_Alpha2. RTT_Prog_Gamma1. What the hell was all this gibberish? Couldn’t the girl just name files in English, for God’s sake? It would have all been so much easier if she wasn’t such a security nut. So careful about everything—Internet access, computer passwords, locking doors, how much she drank—everything. If they could’ve just broken into her machine over the Internet and downloaded her files, they could’ve skipped all this James Bond crap.

But no, ever since they’d figured out that cool trick about the in-lines and cut them all off, the only way they’d been able to get at the study data was to sit right down at Josie’s machine, with her DigiEnsure card in hand and the password du jour, and do it manually—copy files onto a data disc or a memory stick or one of those handy little external hard drives. And that meant you had to find one of those rare times when Josie was not actually in physical contact with her machine.

Yeah, this job had definitely gotten a lot harder of late. Fortunately, that computer hacker guy that Gary and Oscar had found knew all about this stuff, and he had taught Theo everything he needed to know, step by step. He was really patient and quite a cool guy, too. Sometimes, Theo would think about not going back to Red River Falls when all this was over. Maybe he’d just stick around RTP, hang out with his new hacker friend, and get one of those big buck computer jobs.

Theo blinked a couple times as he stared at the strange file names. His eyes were going a little fuzzy on him. Sleep deprivation, no doubt. He’d been using those sleeping pills regularly, sleeping a lot it seemed, but still so tired. It was the damn nightmares. They kept waking him up, over and over. He hadn’t had nightmares since he was a kid. They were the same ones from his childhood, too—the fire. Fire all around him. His dad carrying him and running through fire. His brother running, too, running through the fire, terrified. And then, sometimes, he’d dream about Josie. Josie and Nic, her stupid rich foreigner boyfriend, kissing at the window. Pulling the curtain. Going to bed!

Argh! He shook his head clear. He needed to concentrate. It was late. They could be coming back any time. They’d said they were going to another party somewhere, so he and Oscar had figured he had at least a couple more hours. But it had been an hour and a half. It was already one thirty. He had the slider open, so he would hear them coming. He could always hear them coming—wooden stairs. Even a church mouse makes noise on wooden stairs. When he heard them, he would bolt out through the sliding glass door onto the terrace, then shimmy down the drainpipe while they were unlocking all those locks. Worked every time. Though it was a little close this evening when Nic had come back alone.
